Center for the Built Environment

New technologies mean that today’s buildings can be more efficient, more attractive, and more responsive to their occupants’ needs than before, i.e. raised access floors. The challenge to building owners, operators and tenants is understanding the opportunities offered by these technologies like access flooring, and learning how best to apply them. In May 1997, a group of industry and government leaders teamed up with faculty and researchers at the University of California, Berkeley to address this challenge. Together we created the Center for the Built Environment—a dynamic, collaborative place where people can share ideas for improving the design and operation of commercial buildings.

The Center for the Built Environment (CBE) was established in May 1997 at the University of California, Berkeley, to provide timely unbiased information on promising new building technologies      ( raised floor systems ) and design techniques. The purpose of this web site is to provide a complete description of underfloor air distribution and related technologies.

International Facility Management Association

The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) is the premier professional association for facility management. Supporting the largest community of FM professionals in the industry, IFMA membership comprises more than 18,000 facility professionals throughout 50 countries. IFMA was established in 1980 as a not-for-profit, incorporated association dedicated to promoting excellence in the management of facilities. Globally, IFMA spots trends, conducts research, provides educational programs, and assists corporate and organizational facility managers in developing strategies to manage human, facility and real estate resources.

The Institute is home to the Building Environment & Thermal Envelope Council, the Building Seismic Safety Council, the Facility Information Council, the International Alliance for Interoperability, the Multihazard Mitigation Council and the Facility Maintenance and Operations Committee among a number of other programs and projects.

Programs and projects include: HAZUS Multihazard Loss Estimation, National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities, Total Building Commissioning, Whole Building Design Guide, and Building Product Pre-Approval Program.

NIBS also publishes the Construction Criteria Base (CCB), the U.S. National CAD StandardAsbestos and Lead-Based Paint Guidance Manuals, and several other informative publications and resources.

Whole Building Design Guide

The Whole Building Design Guide is the only web-based portal providing government and industry practitioners with one-stop access up-to-date information on a wide range of building-related guidance, criteria and technology from a 'whole buildings' perspective. Currently organized into two major categories - Design Guidance and Project Management - at the heart of the WBDG are Resource Pages, reductive summaries on particular topics, such as access flooring , raised access flooring and cable management.

Development of the WBDG is a collaborative effort among federal agencies, private sector companies, non-profit organizations and educational institutions. Its success depends on industry and government experts contributing their knowledge and experience to better serve the building community.

The WBDG web site is offered as an assistance to building professionals by the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) through the funding of the NAVFAC Criteria Office, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the Department of Energy (through the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)), and the assistance of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC). A Board of Direction and Advisory Committee, consisting of representatives from over 25 participating federal agencies, private sector companies, and non-profit organizations, guide the development of the WBDG.
